Marketing Strategist Helps Job Seekers with Free Resume Guide
Marketing expert helps job seekers by creating a new, strategic approach to the common resume.
What’s the problem with most resumes? According to marketing strategist David Fideler, it’s the fact many resumes lack a real message.
Fideler has recently published a guide, How to Create a Strategic Resume, which is available as a free download on his website, www.coreresume.net. He’s also developed a unique kind of resume called a CoreResume, and the strategy behind it is described in the report.
“When someone creates a resume,” Fideler said, “the focus is usually on a list of past positions, rather than the real value a candidate offers to an employer. But without a solid core message, which explains the real value you offer, a resume will be less effective.”
“The main thing you want,” Fideler explained, “is to get your resume in the ‘to interview’ pile. But since you only have 15 seconds to do this, you need to instantly make a strong impression. By combining a strong value message with graphic design that highlights the message, it’s possible to create a resume that really stands out, even in a stack of 100 or 200 competing documents.”
It began with a presentation
David Fideler developed the CoreResume approach when invited to speak at a local university. “John Rumery, a professor at Grand Valley State University, asked me to speak about how to develop core marketing messages. Since many of his students were getting ready to graduate, he also asked me to talk about how you can use a core message in the job search process.”
Fideler — a copywriter, a West Michigan native, and advisor to the marketing program at Ferris State University — created a handout for the class on how to create a resume using proven marketing principles, and the CoreResume was born.
The CoreResume is based on a process called “Core Message Analysis,” which Fideler developed for helping business clients. “When I was invited to speak to the class, I saw how it could be used to create a better kind of resume, one with a real strategy behind it.”
The students loved the approach, and several said it made more sense than what they’d been taught about resumes in school. Based on the enthusiastic response, David Fideler decided to launch CoreResume, which is now offered as a service through his company, Concord Communications and Design.
